Le Tour de France

Viime sunnuntaina helteen lamauttama kaupunki lähti liikkeelle: Tour de Francen finaali saapui Pariisiin.

Last Sunday the city paralysed by a heat wave woke up: the final of the Tour de France arrived to Paris.

Versaillesta startannut sadannen Tour de Francen finaali järjestettiin poikkeuksellisesti iltakisana. Pyöräilijät saapuivat kaupunkiin Seinen rantaa pitkin päätyen Champs-Elyséesille, jossa vedettiin ympyrää Riemukaaren ympäri. Ikävä kyllä helle oli edelleen puoli kahdeksan aikaan illalla niin tukahduttava, etten jaksanut lähteä maaliviivalle saakka, vaan päädyin kävelemään sata metriä asuntoni vieressä Seinen ylittävälle Pont de Bir-Hakeim -sillalle. Sielläkin oli porukkaa. Kaikki odottivat hiljaa jännittyneinä, jotkut virittivät kameroittensa asetuksia.

The final of the 100th Tour de France started from Versailles and it was exceptionally organised in the evening. The cyclists arrived to the city by the river Seine and followed it up to the Champs-Elysées, where they circled around the Arc de Triomphe. Unfortunately it was still so warm at half past seven in the evening that I didn't have the energy to walk all the way to the finish line. Instead I ended up going to the Pont de Bir-Hakeim bridge that's right next to my apartment. There were people there too. Everyone was waiting in silent excitement, some were checking their camera settings.

Sitten sillan alitse alkoi kulkea tööttääviä ajoneuvoja, jotka kuljettivat katoillaan pyöriä. Ja sitten:

Then there were cars with bicycles attached to their roofs, honking their horns, driving under the bridge. And then:

There they go! It was quickly over but it was still great to be a part of this legendary event, especially on its 100th anniversary. Congrats to Kittel for the Paris win and to Froome for the Tour win!

For some reason I haven't really done many "Paris things" since I've moved here. The Seine, the Eiffel Tower, les Invalides, the Louvre et cetera are just the setting of a play called "Life in Paris". The plot of the play on the other hand includes fierce exchange of views with a stalking neighbor, ironing clothes for work and an allergic reaction to antibiotics.

Onneksi joskus tulee vieraita, ja hetkeksi näytelmä saa uutta potkua. Silloin taustalla alkaa kuulua haitarimusiikkia ja juoneen punoutuu iltakävely Champs-Elyséellä ja makean pastellinsävyisiä unelmia Laduréen konditoriassa.

Fortunately, at some point guests arrive and the play gets a little more exciting. For a moment there's an accordion playing in the background and the plot takes you walking down the Champs-Elysée at night and living pastel colored dreams in the Ladurée patisserie.

Macaronsejahan sieltä ostettiin. Appelsiininkukkaa, ruusua, sitruunaa ja pistaasia. Rapeita päältä ja tahmeita sisältä.

We got macarons of course. Orange blossom, rose, lemon and pistachio. Crisp on the outside, sticky on the inside.

Mutta ei makeaa mahantäydeltä. Nähtävyyksiä kierrellen vietetyt päivät ovat raskaita ja odotan jo innolla maanantai-aamua, jolloin saan taas pyöräillä tutun reitin töihin, naputella koneelle salasanan ja pistää teeveden kiehumaan.

But too much is too much. Days spent sight seeing can be hard and I'm already looking forward to Monday morning when I will cycle the every day route to work, type my password on the computer and put the kettle on.

Some of you might have wondered what a work day is like at the embassy. It's quite a regular office job actually: you sit in front of the computer, you run to the printer, you search information and you write stuff. At some point you eat lunch in the kitchen if it's rainy or in the garden if it's sunny.

No, eivät kaikki työpäivät kulu omassa työhuoneessa. Tietoa haetaan netin lisäksi erilaisista briiffeistä ja seminaareista, joita Ranskan viranomaiset ja järjestöt järjestävät ministeriöissä, kansalliskokouksessa ja muissa vähemmän tunnetuissa paikoissa. Viime viikolla pääsin ensimmäistä kertaa briiffiin Ranskan ulkoministeriön paraatipuolelle. Se oli aika hienoa.

Well, not all of my working days are spent in my own office. To get information, we rely on other sources than just the internet: we go to briefings and seminars organized by the French authorities and organisations in the ministries, at the parliament and in other less known locations around Paris. Last week I got to attend a briefing at better side of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was quite fancy.

Kuriositeettina kokoushuoneen vieressä oli George VI:n vuoden 1938 virallista vierailua varten rakennettu kylpyhuone, joka on säilytetty alkuperäisessä kunnossaan. Jälleen kerran kirosin kamerani surkeaa kykyä ottaa tarkkoja kuvia hämärissä huoneissa (tai monissa muissakaan tiloissa). Saakohan presidentti Niinistö yhtä kuninkaallisen vastaanoton ensi viikolla?

As a curiosity, there was a bathroom built for the 1938 official visit of George VI right next to the room where the meeting was held. Once again I cursed my camera for its inability to take sharp pictures in dark rooms (or in any other places). I wonder if the Finnish president Niinistö gets such a royal reception next week?

À l'Ambassade

Suurlähetystöllä työskentely kannattaa.

Working at the Embassy is worth it.

Etenkin jos kaipaa salmiakkia.

Especially if you crave for some Finnish salmiakki.
