Ça sent le gaz...

Ranskassa kaikki toimii kaasulla. Koko Solferino, yksi Lillen pääväyliä, oli poikki kaasuvuodon takia.

In France, everything works with gas. That is of course, in the eyes of a Finnish person, extremely dangerous. If you accidentally leave the gas on, the whole building will explode. And even we were all very careful, there can still be a "fuite de gaz", the gas just starts leaking. A couple of days ago I was walking back home from the university, when fire trucks blocked my route. "Madame, vous pouvez plus passer, c'est une fuite de gaz!" said the firefighter and pointed me to a different direction. The whole of Solferino, one of the main roads in Lille, was blocked because of this gas leak.

No, tänä iltana ne paloautot sitten pyyhälsivät meidän talomme eteen. Olin juuri laittamassa illallista, kun kuulin keittiön ikkunan alta ujellusta. Hetken aikaa olimme kämppiksen kanssa kauhuissamme, sillä eilen naapuri väitti, että sisäpihalla haisee kaasu. Kurkimme parvekkeelta kadulle muiden asukkaiden tavoin yrittäen ottaa selvää siitä, mitä tapahtui. Ilmeisesti kyseessä oli kuitenkin jokin helposti korjattava vika tai väärä hälytys, sillä muutaman minuutin kadulla pyörittyään palomiehet häipyivät.

Well, tonight the fire trucks arrived in front of our house. I was just cooking dinner as I heard the noise. For a moment me and my flatmate got really scared: yesterday a neighbor said he could smell gas on the court side of the building. We stopped what we were doing and tried to find out what was going on from the balcony, like all the other people. In the end, it appears to have been just something easily fixed or a false alarm since after a few minutes the fire fighters got back into their trucks and drove away.

Mitä opimme ranskalaisista tänään? - He elävät jatkuvassa hengenvaarassa.

What did we learn about French people today? - They live in constant danger.
