Le Vin

Kun lähdin Ranskaan vannoin, että elän koko vuoden pelkällä viinillä ja juustolla. Ainakin vielä niitä on riittänyt. Tällä viikolla osallistuin Sciences Po:n opiskelijajärjestö Cépage de Trévisen järjestämään viininmaisteluun (dégustation).

When I left for France, I swore I would live on wine and cheese all year long. At least until now I have been able to do so. This week I participated in a wine tasting organized by the student association Cépage de Trévise.

Tarjolla oli yksi rosé, yksi valkoviini, yksi punaviini sekä lopuksi yksi ylimääräinen yllätyspunaviini. Illan isäntänä toimi isovatsainen "oenologue", joka esitteli jokaisen viinin ja kertoili viinin valmistusprosessista. Pursuileva pöydällinen valko- ja sinihomejuustoja piti nälän loitolla.

We were offered one glass of rosé, one of white wine, one of red wine and one surprise glass of red wine. The host of the evening was an "oenologue" with a big belly. He introduced each wine and told us about the process of wine making. An abundant table of white and blue cheese kept the hunger away.

Ja viinihän tietysti syljettiin oikeaoppisesti pois jokaisen maistelun jälkeen... Tai sitten tämä kuva on lavastettu. Tosiasiahan on, että ranskalaiset opiskelijat eivät tässä paljoa suomalaisista eroa, joten kukaan ei "oenologuen" suosituksesta huolimatta käyttänyt sylkykuppia. 

And after each mouthful we spit out the wine... Or is this photo fake? As a matter of fact, the students are the same in Finland and in France, so no one spit anything out despite the recommendation of the "oenologue".

Viini oli hyvää, ihmiset olivat mukavia. Maksoin maistelusta kymmenen euroa, joka ei mielestäni ollut kova hinta. Sen sijaan kauppaan mennessäni tuppaan ostamaan vain halvimpia, parin-kolmen euron viinejä, kuten muutkin opiskelijat täällä - tosin olut taitaa Lillessä olla suositumpi juoma kuin viini, olemmehan aivan Belgian rajalla. Osa noista halpisviineistä on ihan kuraa, mutta aterian kanssa ne ovat kuitenkin käypiä. Kerran maksoin pullosta 4,40, ja se oli mielestäni jo ihan laadukasta. Mutta periaatteena kuitenkin on, ettei yli Alkon halvimman viinin mennä, muutenhan olisin täällä ihan turhaan!

The wine was good, the people were nice. I payed 10 euros for the tasting, which was not a lot. When I go to the shop, on the other hand, I tend to buy the cheapest two or three euro wines as do the other students here - even though it might be worth mentioning that beer is probably more popular here in Lille as we are right at the Belgian border. Some of the cheap wines are rubbish but with a meal they are still ok. Once I payed 4,40 e for a bottle and that was already quite good. But my principle is that I don't pay more than I would pay for the cheapest wine in Alko (the finnish state monopoly for alcohol), otherwise I would be here for nothing!

Nyt, kun olen viiniasiantuntija, voinkin lähteä hyvillä mielin Lontooseen viettämään Toussaintin lomia. Pitäisikö viedä viiniä tuliaisiksi kanaalin tuollapuolen asuville ystävilleni?

Now that I'm a trained wine expert I'm good to go to London to spread the knowledge and to spend my holidays of Toussaint. Should I bring wine to my friends on the other side of the channel?
