Ma coloc a préparé des crêpes!

Kauan sitä odotin ja vihdoinkin se saapui. Suoraan Chilestä: ranskalainen kämppis!

I had to wait for a long time but finally she's here. Straight from Chile: my french roomie!

There she is, making crêpes and saying "Salut!" to you guys. It's great to finally have some one to hang out with in the kitchen on a Friday afternoon. What is even greater, that person makes me crêpes!

Tarkoituksena olisi mennä mahdollisimman pian testaamaan yliopiston lähellä sijaitseva crêperie, jossa on kuulemma ihan kohtuullisen hintaisia lounasmenuita.

I had never tried the savoury version. It was delicious! Crêpes are a speciality of the Bretagne area but they seem to be very popular here in Lille too. I am planning on going to the crêperie near the university as soon as possible, I've heard they have reasonably priced lunch menus.

There's only one way to spend a Sunday morning if you live near the Wazemmes neighbourhood. Take a big bag and head to the Marché de Wazemmes, i.e. the market of Wazemmes.

Wazemmesin sunnuntaitorilta löytyy kaikkea: mausteita, vihanneksia, kankaita, makkaraa, keittiötarvikkeita, vaatteita, kosmetiikkaa ja niin edelleen. Tungos on kova, kauppiaat huutavat tarjouksiaan ja pienet kerjäläislapset tarttuvat sivukujilla kulkijan pohkeeseen. Gambettan metroaseman edessä esiintyy katusoittajien ryhmä, keskellä markkinoita kaikuu kaiuttimista arabiankielinen rukous.

On the market of Wazemmes you can find pretty much everything: spices, vegetables, fabrics, sausages, kitchenwear, clothes, cosmetics and so on. The market is very busy, the vendors are shouting their offers and the children of beggars will grab your leg at the alleyways nearby. In front of the Gambetta metro station there are street musicians playing, in the middle of the market an arabic prayer blares out of a pair of speakers.

Wazemmesin alue on erittäin multietninen.

Wazemmes is a multiethnical area. You can find lots of products from the Maghreb area and oriental specialities on the market and the shops surrounding it. This morning my Berber-friend was able to do all her shopping in arabic!

I bought swiss chard, almonds, spicy olives, beetroot, a courgette, parsnip, green beans, chili powder, curry powder, sweet grapes (they are in season now, so good), coriander and chamomile. The man in the picture above sells herbs by the metro station. I thought I bought from him with two euros a bunch of parsley and a bunch of mint, but at home I noticed that he had stuffed all together eight bunches of herbs into the bag! What on earth am I going to do with all that?

Les Fleurs de Septembre

Törmäsin pari päivää sitten kotimatkalla tähän ihastuttavaan ruusuun:

A couple of days ago, on my way home, I came across this beautiful rose:

Niitä oli itse asiassa enemmänkin.

There were more of them, actually.

Aloin kulkiessani bongailla ympäristöni kukkia.

As I was walking, I started to check out the flowers around me.

Then I had a great idea. A marched into the nearest shop that sells plants and I bought this little creature to put on my french balcony (which is mine only for now, we'll see who get's it when my flatmate gets back):

Kieltämättä tämä neilikka (?) on hieman vaatimaton tuossa nököttäessään, pitäisi kai jotenkin ripustaa se kiinni tuohon ristikkoon... Toivottavasti voin pitää sitä ulkona vielä pari kuukautta. Minä ja neilikka yhdessä syksyä vastaan!

She's looking a little humble there, sitting on the cold stone. I should probably somehow try to hang her up on the iron grid... I hope I can still keep her outdoors for a couple of months. Me and my flower against the autumn!

Une baguette, s'il vous plaît.

Naapurikorttelin boulangeriessa käy kova vilske lounasaikaan, kun ihmiset käyvät ostamassa patonkia, joko täytettynä tai paljaaltaan. Monet tuntuvat olevan hyvin tarkkoja siitä, millainen patonki on kyseessä ja täsmentävätkin tiskin yli, minkä kypsyysasteen haluavat: "une baguette légèrement dorée" (kevyesti kullanruskea patonki) tai "une baguette bien cuite" (hyvin kypsä patonki).

The boulangerie next door is busy around lunch time when people go to buy their baguettes, either made into sandwiches or as just plain bread. Mostly they seems to be very particular about the kind of baguette they want and they often remember to mention how well baked their baguette should be: "une baguette légèrement dorée" (not so well-baked) or "une baguette bien cuite" (well done).

I myself don't notice any difference between the baguettes that have spent a different time in the oven, not on the level of looks nor on the level of taste. But the baguettes with different names do differ from the basic model, especially on the level of texture.

In my opinion, baguettes are very problematic, especially for someone who lives alone (that's me for another week until my beloved colocataire returns from Chile). They stay fresh for only about 24 hours and it is impossible to eat them in such a short time. Today I was dragging home a baguette the length of my leg and trying to think what to do with the part that will inevitably be left to dry dull overnight. Any ideas?

La paperasserie

Moni on varmaan kuullut puhuttavan ranskalaisesta byrokratiasta. Se ei ole mikään naurun asia.

You might have heard about the French bureaucracy. It's not a very amusing thing.

Passikuvia, kopioita, todistuksia...

ID photos, copies, certificates... Opening a bank account, getting internet and applying for CAF demands a lot of work. Fortunately I've now successfully enrolled myself on the courses and at the university. What worries me though is that I still haven't signed a lease for this appartement...

Mutta mitä siitä, onhan vielä kesä! Parc Vauban, kylmä juoma ja muutama kaveri vievät kyllä turhan stressin mennessään.

But who cares, after all it's still summer! Parc Vauban, a cold drink and a few friends will help you to relax.

J'aime le lait d'ici

Innostuin viime kauppakäynnillä ostelemaan aika paljon ruokaa. Johtuiko se Suomeen verrattuna huokeista hinnoista vai yritänkö rauhoittaa elämänmuutoksen rasittamaa mieltäni täydellä jääkaapilla? Toisaalta, kuka voisi vastustaa esimerkiksi näin söpöä maitopurkkia?

I got a little carried away with my food shopping last time I went to the supermarket. I wonder if it were the cheap prices (compared to Finland) or am I trying to find a piece of mind in the middle of all these changes in my life by filling up my fridge? On the other hand, who could resist packaging this cute?

Sydän ja kaikkea!

It's got a heart on it and everything!

Siinäpä esimerkki hyvin brändätystä lähiruuasta.

Now there's an example of a well branded local product.

La Braderie de Lille

Valitsin hyvän ajankohdan saapumiselleni. Heti ensimmäisenä viikonloppuna pääsin tekemään uuteen kotiini tarpeellisia hankintoja la Braderie -katukirpputoritapahtumaan, joka on joko Euroopan tai Ranskan suurin, riippuu keneltä kysyy.

I chose a good timing for my arrival here. The first weekend, I had the possibility to search for necessary things for my house in la Braderie, which is the biggest flee market event in either the whole of Europe or the whole of France depending on who you ask.

La Braderie happens all over the streets of Lille. There are some commercial stalls, but if you stay away from the high streets, you get to look through regular people's stuff and the amazing things the antiques dealers have to offer. Lamps, crystals, lace, old maps, mirrors, books, couches....

Ilmassa on suuren urheilujuhlan tuntua... Kaduilla törmää musiikkiesityksiin, ravintolat täyttyvät ihmisistä, jotka nauttivat simpukoista ja ranskalaisista, eli "moules frites". Yöllä on turha yrittää nukkua, koska kaikki juhlivat ja melu on tietenkin sen mukainen.

It's basically a carnival... Street musicians, or bands more like, perform frequently and the restaurants are full of people who are enjoying mussels with chips, i.e. "moules frites". And don't even think of sleeping at night, the party's on and the noise is loud.

Tässä minun ostokseni:

Here's what I bought:

Olkikassi neljällä eurolla.
A straw bag for 4 euros.

Lamppu, jonka jalkaan saa pyöritettyä päivämäärän, 10 euroa. Se pitää kyllä puhdistaa.
A lamp where you can mark the date, 10 euros. I think I'll have to clean it though.

Je suis arrivée!

Toisessa kerroksessa sijaitsevaan asuntooni kiivetään näitä portaita pitkin:

To get to my apartment on the second floor, you must climb up these stairs:

Minulla on jo raskalainen prepaid-kortti (jolla soitetut Ranskan sisäiset puhelut maksavat suunnilleen saman verran kuin ulkomaanpuhelut suomalaisella sim-kortilla), juustopala jääkaapissa sekä pari ranskalaista kaveria! Internet-yhteyttä saan kuitenkin vielä odottaa, sillä kämppikseni mademoiselle D. palaa Ranskaan vasta viikon kuluttua ja teemme hankinnan sitten yhdessä. Alla oleva kuva on otettu olohuoneen ikkunasta.

I have already a french sim-card (and the calls are ridiculously expensive here), a small piece of cheese in my fridge and a couple of French friends! I'll still have to wait to get an internet connection because I'll need to negotiate about it with my flatmate mademoiselle D. who will be returning to France in one week. The picture below is taken from the living room window.
